CMS Surveyors partners with UNSW

Thank you to the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering for such a warm welcome!

We provide support and sponsorship to UNSW's Bachelor of Engineering (Surveying) courses

“The School of Civil and Environmental Engineering warmly welcomes new industry partner CMS Surveyors to our engineering community. Directors Stuart McEvoy and Andrew Cummins are UNSW alumni and in 2001 they joined with David Lovell and Stuart Soltau to form CMS Surveyors, which has since enjoyed continual commercial growth and workplace harmony.”

CMS projects vary greatly in size, location and nature. As marketing officer Melissa Lovell notes: “with close to 70 staff, we have the capacity to provide professional survey services immediately, as required by our clients throughout NSW. We have a large contingent of surveyors of various professional skillsets in land and engineering surveying. This diversity allows CMS Surveyors to undertake projects ranging from residential surveys to multi-million-dollar commercial developments.”

This multi-disciplinary approach to surveying has kept CMS at the forefront of surveying in NSW. Across Sydney their services have been used in such diverse and significant projects as the International Towers Project at Barangaroo and other high-profile building developments such as the 33 storey Mirvac tower in George St and the innovative 30 storey tower at 8 Chifley Square.

CMS hopes to extend this people-based philosophy by strengthening its relationship with CVEN through the School’s Industry Partner Program

But it was their expertise in Business Information Modelling that saved a grand old fig tree in Camperdown from the damaging effects of an adjacent build. 3D modelling of a Birchgrove streetscape ensured that newly built premises did not interfere with the sightline of existing homes and a number of Sydney high schools have been successfully and individually refurbished using CMS surveys.

Quick turnaround timeframes have become an economic necessity and it is technology that is improving delivery timeframes across the surveying industry. CMS is one of the few Survey Practices that have the in-house knowledge and expertise to process and model from 3D scanning work. Recently, they used the CORS-net GNSS system: a network of permanent pillars using Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) tracking stations that improve the accuracy of satellite positioning, to complete the field work on the Malabar Headland Walkway Project with unprecedented speed.

The CMS expertise in 3D modelling, aerial mapping and general technological innovation has been recognised by their peers: winning the NSW EISSI Award for Extra Dimension & Innovation in 2017 and for Technical Excellence in 2016.

Staying fully conversant with technological development is a vital part of the CMS success story, but it is their people that are most valued. “CMS Surveyors’ strength lies in its people, many of whom have been with the Company since its inception, building on their skills alongside the evolving development of the Company itself.” CMS hopes to extend this people-based philosophy by strengthening its relationship with CVEN through the School’s Industry Partner Program, as an avenue to mentoring and engaging those CVEN students interested in the brave new world of surveying in the digital age.”
