What is an aerial survey?

An aerial survey is a method of collecting geographic data and imagery by using manned aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), or drones. This technique is used to capture high-resolution images and maps of a large area from above, making it ideal for applications such as environmental monitoring, land development, and infrastructure planning.

Aerial surveys provide a detailed view of the land, offering a cost-effective way to gather accurate data over vast or hard-to-reach terrains. The aerial images and data collected can then be used to create 3D models, aerial maps, and even assist in remote sensing for more complex analyses.

How can I use Aerial Surveying for my project?

Aerial surveying is diverse in its application, and we’d love to chat about how your project could benefit from it! Here are some of the most common ways Aerial Surveying is used in the industry.

Drone mapping in aerial survey

Drone mapping is a cutting-edge method used in aerial surveys to capture detailed and high-resolution aerial imagery. Unlike traditional manned aircraft, drones are unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that can fly closer to the ground and capture more precise data. These drones are equipped with advanced sensors and cameras, enabling them to map out large areas with great accuracy.

Drone surveys are ideal for projects that require aerial mapping or 3D models, such as property developments, construction, and environmental monitoring. With the ability to survey hard-to-reach areas quickly, drone surveys offer a greener, cost-effective and efficient alternative to traditional surveying methods.

RPAS (Remote Piloted Aircraft System) Photogrammetry

Photogrammetry is the science of making measurements from photographs. The output from photogrammetry is typically a map, a drawing or a 3D model of a real world object or land mass.

In Aerial RPAS Photogrammetry, the camera is mounted in an aircraft/drone and is usually pointed vertically towards the ground. Multiple overlapping photos of the ground are taken as the aircraft flies along a flight path. These photos are processed using desktop software and can create many output formats.

Roof profiles

Using the RPAS technology, we are able to re-create roof profiles that are inaccessible using traditional methods of surveying or laser scanning. RPAS/Drones can fly over a property quickly and efficiently from which we can reproduce the roof profiles to be added to the working model or survey

Earthworks and Construction sites

Using aerial survey techniques, you can manage extraction volumes, quantify stockpiles and monitor changes through periodic pick ups.

Construction sites are busy places that can have multiple contractors working across multiple works on any given day. Drone technology is able to accurately and safely monitor sites quickly and efficently, not only helping the client but reducing costs.

Through the use of aerial photographs, our project monitoring includes, not just visual data, but a complete and accurate topographic 3D model and orthophoto giving the client a far better overview of the project.

Topographical Surface Surveys (eg golf courses, open spaces)

Drones can quickly and efficiently survey open spaces such as sports fields, golf courses and open paddocks. RPAS combined with survey accurate ground control, can result in a Digital Terrain Model and an ortho-rectified aerial image for planning purposes.
